Neck pains are usually the result of muscle strains in the neck. Muscle strains can occur for any number of reasons, such as improper standing or sitting postures, improper sleep patterns, pinched nerves or stress. Knowing how to prevent these strains can cause fewer trips to the chiropractor or doctor’s office.
Neck pain can be prevented if you exercise the neck on a daily basis; sit straight in a chair instead of hunchback; don’t slouch when standing, walking or sitting; and taking five-minute breaks away from the computer, every hour. (The breaks should consist of stepping away from the desk to walk an item to another office, file a few papers or simply do a few neck exercises.)
Place the computer screen at eye level, so that you are not bending the neck in a downward position to read the screen. And when sleeping, use a rolled towel or neck support pillow.
If neck pain occurs, place an ice pack on the affected area. Never use a heating pad, as it will cause the inflamed muscles to stay inflamed. A nice massage can also help relieve some of the tension, as well as a lukewarm bath with Epsom salts.
If the strain does not go away within a day, consider chiropractic care. It may be that a pinched nerve is causing the muscles to involuntarily contract, thus causing the pain.
If you find that you are tense and carry stress in your neck, find ways to release the tension. A great way to help deal with your stress would be to listen to classical or soothing music, while lying on your back watching the clouds float by (or the stars). Simply let all your cares escape you for a few hours. Look up into the sky while envisioning your dream unfolding before your very eyes.
