The trio of medications included in Fioricet work in tandem to relieve tension headaches. The Acetaminophen in Fioricet produces analgesia by causing the production of prostaglandins in the central nervous system to stop. Analgesia also occurs via a peripheral action in which pain impulse generation is blocked. Butalbital causes sensory cortex depression by inhibiting conduction in the reticular formation at the level of the thalamus.
Caffeine causes central nervous system stimulation by arresting the phosphodiesterase. This in turn increases the accumulation of c-AMP (cyclic adenosine 3′5′-monophosphate.) The pharmacological effects of oral anticoagulants, corticosteroids, estrogens, griseofulvin (an anti-fungal drug), doxycycline, theophyllines, quinidine, and beta-adrenergic blockers may be decreased when Fioricet is used. Methoxylflurance, a common anesthetic may become more toxic if used with Fioricet. If Fioricet is taken with hydantoins or sulfinpyrazone, there is a higher risk for possible hepatotoxicity. When taken with alcohol and other CNS depressants, Fioricet may have an additive toxic effect.
It may not be wise for you to use Fioricet if you have a sensitivity to any of the ingredients in Fioricet. You should utilize Fioricet with caution if you have increased intracranial pressure, any head injury, severe liver or kidney impairment, Addison’s disease, hypothyroidism, and prostatic hypertrophy or urethral blockage.
You might feel dizzy, sleepy, or lightheaded when taking Fioricet. Lightheadness is a problem with Fioricet, so watch yourself if you are using machinery or when you are doing something that you need to stay awake for, like driving. Alcohol should be avoided when using Fioricet. If it causes indigestion, Fioricet can be taken with a meal or a glass of milk. Keep Fioricet in a cool, dry location, away from bright light and children. Consult your physician regularly when taking Fioricet, since it is quite addictive. Follow directions and only use Fioricet the way it is suggested, the dose suggested, and don’t use it more than suggested.
If used correctly, it should relieve migraines and headaches due to stress. If Fioricet is not effective in your case, let your doctor know so that another medication can be prescribed.
